Church is an intelligent immortal cat, and was rescued by a shadowhunter from being resurrected. He is usually a grouch, unless being petted, and does not let anyone carry him without some struggle.
History
At some point, the Eidolon demon Mrs. Dark got ahold of the cat and performed a necromantic ritual on it that made it immortal.[1] In 1878, the cat was meant to be used as a sacrifice to resurrect her sister, Mrs. Black, before it was rescued by Jem Carstairs, the only human that Church has ever shown affection for. After this, Jem brought him back to the London Institute, where it has lived ever since. Charlotte Branwell agreed to keep it, saying it was good luck to have a cat in the church.[2]
After Jem became a Silent Brother, Church missed him and mourned for him. Upon hearing this from Charlotte, the warlock Magnus Bane took the cat with him to New York.[3] The cat soon came to live in the New York Institute, where the cat served as a guide, as he always seems to know where everyone is.[4]

Church is a fat Russian-blue furred, yellow-eyed Persian cat with a squashed-in face, and at times curls up and looks like a small ottoman.

Etymology
When Church first came to the Institute, he was simply referred to as "the church cat", and was soon enough just called and named "Church."
