The Wayland manor was the home of the Wayland family in Idris.

Description[]

Wayland manor once neighbored the Fairchild manor.

The manor's study was a large stone-walled room with a Persian rug and several items of furniture, including a grand piano. The room had velvet curtains that covered huge glass windows. Outside of the study was a long corridor with dozens of mirrors on the walls between doors. At the end of the hallway was the library, which was filled with shelves of books, seating, and a statue. Ladders on rolling casters lined the walls to reach the high shelves on which marble busts took up space alongside more books. The ceiling was flat and conical, the walls made of stone with green velvet curtains that hung over diamond-paned windows that alternated between green and blue glass panes.

There was a secret opening in the library that was presumably activated by removing Valentine Morgenstern's journals from a high shelf that was forbidden to Jace. Once triggered, the stone walls slid back to reveal a doorway of smooth black stone walls and a set of spiral stairs leading to a cellar. The cellar's stone walls were streaked with stains and dampness. The floor was marked with pentagrams and runes and had bones scattered around. One of the far corners of the room had been covered by a hanging cloth. Behind it was where Ithuriel had been held captive; a pentagram made of connected runes graven into the floor created a barrier and manacles for good measure were attached to metal staples driven into the stone floor holding him in place.[1]

History[]

It was home to the Wayland family for generations. In the early 1990s, Jocelyn Morgenstern hid the Book of the White in the mansion's library, in a cookbook which she doubted Valentine would ever open. When Valentine Morgenstern killed Michael Wayland and his son, he moved into the country estate while using his identity. There, he raised Stephen Herondale's son as his own. He also bound the angel Ithuriel to the house and kept him in the cellar. When Valentine faked his death in front of Jace, the house was left abandoned.

Destruction[]

In 2007, Clary and Jace went to the house to get the Book of the White, which they found right where Jocelyn had put it years before. They also found Ithuriel in a hidden cellar. After releasing him, Ithuriel released his soul by killing himself in the mortal world. The magic that bound his life force to the house broke and caused the house to collapse.[1]
