Description[]

Magnus Bane leverages his alliances with Downworlders and Shadowhunters on a venture to Victorian London.

When immortal warlock Magnus Bane attends preliminary peace talks between the Shadowhunters and the Downworlders in Victorian London, he is charmed by two very different people: the vampire Camille Belcourt and the young Shadowhunter, Edmund Herondale. Will winning hearts mean choosing sides?

London, 1857.

Despite being disgusted by the vampires since the French Revolution, Magnus is attracted to Camille Belcourt, a vampire he sits next to at a meeting between Downworlders and Shadowhunters, taking place at the London Institute. Most Shadowhunters still despise Downworlders and are not afraid to show it. After a short verbal exchange between Magnus and the Consul, but before they proceed with the meeting, several young Shadowhunters attempting to overhear the meeting tumble into the room. Magnus sees, for the first time, among them a boy with golden hair and an elegant face. Magnus is really impressed by his eyes, which are blue and both joyous and tender. He then brings his attention back to the meeting and to what the Consul is saying.

After the meeting, Magnus walks down the Thames River, thinking of ways to see Camille again, as he thinks she might be the one for him. Magnus decides he should pay a visit to the vampire clan of London because, as he says, "attractive and interesting persons do not simply drop out of the sky". Particularly at this moment, the boy Magnus saw at the meeting somersaults off the top of the wall and lands beside him. He learns the name of the boy, Edmund Herondale, and finds out from him that the Morgensterns threw out the plates the Downworlders used at the meeting, as they are disgusted to eat from the same plates as Downworlders.

Edmund, unlike other Shadowhunters, does not mind Magnus' company. They share some thoughts about life and love. Magnus learns that Edmund does not believe in marriage and has never had a broken heart. They are not far away from St. James's Street when they encounter the carriage of two young ladies being attacked by a demon. Without hesitation, much to Magnus' amazement, Edmund runs off to rescue the ladies. Once rescued, they learn that the demon attacked a young woman named Linette Owens and her abigail, Angharad.

Some time later, Magnus attends another meeting at the London Institute, where he again meets Camille. As he finds himself again in another argument with Shadowhunters, he walks out of the meeting and stumbles upon the same blue-eyed Edmund Herondale. Magnus learns about the blooming romance between Linette Owens and Edmund, and about Edmund's thoughts of leaving the Shadowhunters to live with her away from the Shadow World. With wishes of luck and love, Magnus walks back to the meeting.

When Magnus returns to the meeting, two sides are still bickering, and he realizes the tension between Camille and young werewolf representative, Ralf Scott. The meeting ends though the Shadowhunters and Downworlders have not yet come to an agreement. As Magnus and the party of representatives are walking out of the Institute, they are attacked by Archaieral demons. The Shadowhunters rush out to help defend them, and they all succeed in defeating the demons. Barely escaping death, Ralf Scott blames the Shadowhunter for the attack. The Shadowhunters and Downworlders have a big argument once again, which makes Ralf Scott angry and he walks away saying the werewolves will take care of their own.

Some time after, Magnus and Camille are trusted to attend the private meeting of Shadowhunters and Downworlders, unlike Alexei de Quincey and Ralf Scott, which flatters Magnus. As he steps inside of the Institute he hears screams from deep inside of the building. After asking about the source of the screams, Shadowhunters who are present at the meeting tell him Edmund Herondale is being stripped off his Marks, as he has decided to leave the Clave because of love.

Magnus wishes to help the boy and Josiah Wayland threatens Magnus as he moves closer to the door. He is taken outside by Camille so he can calm down. Once outside, Camille tells him about her distress of him planning to leaving London, and she thinks he should stay. Magnus replies that she, in turn, should give Ralf Scott another chance for her love and that he might return and find her someday. To commemorate their love, he gives her a ruby necklace with an inscription, so she does not forget him. Camille kisses him and they part.
