Sebastian Verlac is an English Shadowhunter from the London Institute.

Early life

Sebastian's mother died when he was young. She had been stubborn and strong-willed, and Sebastian felt that his life with her was miserable. Still, he forgave her because he knew she loved him anyway, even if she didn't show it in a typical way.

Life in New York

After getting addicted to yin fen, Sebastian decided to leave London to find his own ways of kicking the addiction. He found his way to New York and ended up at the local Institute, where he met Isabelle Lightwood, who was battling with her more recent addiction to the drug. Sebastian gave her a drop of a root extract which he discovered helped with the pain of the withdrawal from yin fen. Wanting to give Isabelle a chance to recover like he did, he tried to convince her to confine herself in the Institute for at least a day.[2]

With the Clave's recent troubles with the Greater Demon Azazel,[3] Sebastian will impart his expertise on Greater Demons.[4] Sebastian connects with Clary upon meeting her and is able to help her through a major roadblock, in addition to helping Isabelle and Alec Lightwood, and is able to gain the trust of and fit himself into the group of Shadowhunters very quickly.[5]

He is a charming, brilliant, and highly-educated Shadowhunter with unrivaled fighting abilities who finds his way to the New York Institute.[6][7]

Behind the scenes

  • This version of Sebastian only appeared on Freeform's Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. He is portrayed by recurring guest star Will Tudor.
  • Differences from the novel:
    • Sebastian Verlac is from London Institute, while his book counterpart was from Paris.
    • The writers put their own spin on the character.
  • Behind the scenes, the writers refer to him as "Bass".[8]
Major spoilers under the cut!
  • It has been implied and theorized that he took the Sword and was the hooded figure seen walking away with it at the end of By the Light of Dawn.[9][10][11][12]
  • Sebastian may have a new backstory on the show.[13][14]
    • He may have grown up in Hell, where he was tortured by a demon. His skin was torn off layer by layer, among other terrible things done to him.
    • Sebastian's character has been described as "someone who can be compassionate, and who may seem like a decent person on the surface. (...) That kind of dramatic resonance never goes away from a person, no matter how you shellac it."[15]
