Ithuriel was the Angel of Sacrifice who was imprisoned by Axel Mortmain and Valentine Morgenstern. Mortmain trapped Ithuriel in Tessa Gray's clockwork angel necklace to protect Tessa. More than a hundred years after he was released from the necklace, he was summoned by Valentine and tortured for years for information about the Mortal Mirror.
Somehow, Ithuriel was trapped inside of the clockwork angel made by John Thadeus Shade. His adopted son, Axel Mortmain, spent years finishing the pendant. He tuned it to Tessa's life and gave it to her mother, Elizabeth, to someday pass onto her. The angel, tuned to Tessa's life, was designed to protect her and save her from death. He made sure that Tessa, as a Shadowhunter and demon hybrid, was born alive instead of stillborn.
The Infernal Devices Edit
After Elizabeth's death, Tessa's brother, Nate, found it in their mother's jewelry box and gave it to Tessa when he found that he could not wind the clockwork.
work in progress
In a dream of Tessa's, Tessa was resolved to die instead of being subjected to Mortmain's orders and throws her clockwork angel necklace in the fire. However, it remained unharmed, and Ithuriel spoke to her, asking her why she did that, as the angel had always protected her. He reveals that he was bound to Tessa's life by Axel Mortmain when she was in the womb of her mother, and as a result, he became her guardian angel. Despite the conditions, Ithuriel never blamed her for his imprisonment. During the final battle, Tessa Changed into Ithuriel to protect her loved ones and to kill Mortmain, and thus freed Ithuriel from the necklace. However, the heavenly fire in her veins nearly killed her.
Imprisoned by Valentine Edit
At one point, Ithuriel was summoned by Valentine and trapped in the cellar of the Wayland manor house in Idris. Valentine tortured him for information about the Mortal Mirror, but Ithuriel would not speak a word, no matter how badly Valentine hurt him.
Soon, Valentine took blood from him and administered it to an unknowing Celine Herondale through food and drinks while she was pregnant with Jace Herondale. This experiment ultimately gave Jace abilities that surpassed a normal Shadowhunter: enhanced speed, strength, agility, durability, stamina, coordination, and leaping ability. It was also given to an Jocelyn Morgenstern the same way in order to cure her of her depression. However, Valentine was unaware that Jocelyn was also pregnant, with Clary, which led to her being gifted with the ability to create new runes and amplify the power of all runes.
Ithuriel remained imprisoned in this cellar for years. He began to send dreams to Clary Fray, in hopes that by giving her answers, she could help stop Valentine. The dreams included warning her of the fact that Simon Lewis would be turned into a vampire, and showing her what Idris looked like so she would have a mental picture in which to create a Portal.
The Mortal Instruments Edit
City of Glass Edit
While in Idris, Clary and Jace were exploring Wayland manor in search of the Book of the White. When they found it, they heard Ithuriel making noises in the cellar and found him bound in a circle of runes. Ithuriel showed them visions of Valentine's history. He also gave Clary a vision of the Alliance rune. Clary then changed the runes in the circle in which Ithuriel was bound. Realizing that there was no hope to cure him, Jace gave Ithuriel his seraph blade, given Ithuriel's name, so that Ithuriel could kill himself to finally end his torment and return to Heaven. Since Wayland manor was tied to Ithuriel's life force, it began to crumble when he died.
Physical Description Edit
Tessa described Ithuriel as glorious, with blonde hair and completely gold eyes, with wings that had eyes painted on the feathers.
In City of Glass, Ithuriel wore white robes, dirty after years of imprisonment. He had blond hair the same color as Jace's. He had no eyes, likely due to Valentine's experimentation, but they were likely the same gold as Jace's before they were removed.
- When Tessa Gray changed into Ithuriel, she was enveloped by the angel's heavenly fire and only survived because the angel protected her. Similarly, Jace Herondale was also enveloped by the heavenly fire when he was stabbed with Glorious, surviving with Ithuriel's blood in him, aided by the fact that there was more good than evil in him.
- Simon Lewis became a "Daylighter" because Jace let him drink his blood and, therefore, Ithuriel's blood.
