Early Life Edit
Imogen never liked kids, but when she had her son, Stephen Herondale, she loved him deeply. She raised and trained him alongside her husband and eventually moved with him to Idris.
His son eventually joined the Circle, something Imogen severely disapproved of. Stephen's death soon followed, followed by her daughter-in-law, Celine Herondale, and husband Marcus, turning Imogen to ice. She became Inquisitor not long after and ruthlessly hunted down former Circle members, brutally punishing those that she did find.
The Mortal InstrumentsEdit
City of AshesEdit
Imogen arrives for the first and only time in City of Ashes, the second book of the series. She intends to decipher Jace's true allegiance after learning that he is the son of Valentine Morgenstern, her hated enemy. When she meets Jace, Imogen has already made up her mind that he is evil and in league with Valentine. Jace's abrasive nature does nothing to pacify the authoritarian Imogen, who imprisons Jace in the Silent City for being insolent toward her.
She bullies and dominates the Lightwood family, treating Maryse Lightwood with particular disdain and dismissing Robert, Alec, Isabelle and Max as beneath contempt. Consumed by hatred and rage for Valentine, she hatches a plan to take Jace as her prisoner and threaten to kill him unless Valentine turns over the Mortal Instruments. In spite of her hatred for children, Imogen, as a former mother, believes that a parent will do anything for their child, even Valentine. Imogen ultimately wants to humble Valentine, aware that his pride is his greatest weakness. She is dismayed after Valentine fails to react to her threat, saying that she can kill Jace if she likes, but he still won't turn over the Mortal Instruments.
She is also horrified to learn from Valentine that Jace was never working for him at all. Valentine humiliates Imogen, telling her that she is nothing. Humbled, Imogen atones by joining the Lightwoods in their siege on Valentine's ship. She takes Jace aside during the battle to apologize to him. She sees the birthmark on his shoulder and realizes that he is in fact not the son of Valentine but of her late son, Stephen, and, by effect, he is her grandson. Ironically, given her past hatred for Jace, she sacrifices her life to save him by throwing herself into the path of a demon's attack. She dies in Jace's arms, telling him "your father would be proud of you", meaning Stephen, although Jace at first assumes it was Valentine she was talking about.
The personification of unpleasant adult authority, Imogen was a sadist who relished the power her position gave her. She was also a fierce legalist. As the story goes on, she becomes more complex once her story is revealed. Imogen was always devoted to The Clave and The Law but she loved her family dearly. She developed a deep hatred for Valentine Morgenstern after he caused the deaths of her son, daughter-in-law and husband. She used her position as Inquisitor to strike out at Valentine and all those who had sided with him. She vented her hatred and bitterness towards Jace Wayland, unaware that he was in fact her grandson, a fact she realized all too late before her death.
Jace had compared her to the Silent Brothers, imagining she was like them: mysterious with their self-contained powers. Upon meeting her, he realized that she is much more direct and hostile.
She is described as a woman who wore a long, old-fashioned dark gray cloak that fell to the tops of her boots, wearing a fitted slate-colored suit with a mandarin collar beneath her cloak. Her hair was a sort of colorless pale blond, pulled tightly back with combs, and her eyes were flinty gray chips.
