Chiara Malatesta is a Shadowhunter and the head of the Rome Institute.
Biography[]
In 2007, Chiara and her Rome Shadowhunters were dispatched to the scene of where the Crimson Hand had attempted to summon the Greater Demon Asmodeus and utter chaos had erupted. When she first arrived, she immediately began conversing with Helen Blackthorn in annoyed Italian. Upon Magnus Bane's interruption, she requested his help in healing some of the wounded cultists. Helen and Aline Penhallow then agreed to join Chiara and the other Shadowhunters in sweeping the grounds and apprehending the remaining cultists.[1]
A few years later in 2012, she attended a Council meeting where the newly resurrected Annabel Blackthorn was to testify against Zara Dearborn. During an argument between the Blackthorns and the Cohort, Chiara suggested that they use the Mortal Sword on Annabel rather than waste time with pointless arguments.[2]

Physical description[]
Chiara is a small olive-skinned woman with deep gray hair worn almost to her shoulders. She wears plain clothes but adorns herself with jewelry.

Chiara is both a feminine Italian given name and a surname; it is the Italian form of the name Clara, which was in turn was derived from the Late Latin name Clarus which meant "clear, bright, famous". This feminine form became popular because of the 13th-century Saint Chiara of Assisi, a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi.
