|Full name:||Alexander Gideon Lightwood|
|Born:|| September 1989|
|Age:||18 (as of May 2008)|
|Residence:||New York Institute|
|Family:|| Robert Lightwood (father)|
Maryse Lightwood (mother)
Isabelle Lightwood (sister)
Max Lightwood † (brother)
Jace Herondale (adoptive brother)
Alec is one of the few openly gay Shadowhunters. Since homosexual Shadowhunters are normally shunned by the Clave, Alec was skeptical about coming out, but he eventually did, revealing to his family, friends, and fellow Shadowhunters his relationship with warlock Magnus Bane, an act that inspired other teenage closeted Shadowhunters to come out about their sexuality, as well.
Alexander Lightwood was the eldest child born to Robert and Maryse Lightwood. Born in Idris, Alec was, along with his parents, exiled from their homeland and was banned from returning unless on official Shadowhunter business. Two years after his birth, his sister, Isabelle, was born, and his younger brother Max was born when he was nine.
When he was eleven years old, Jace Wayland was adopted into their family. Alec developed an almost instant rapport with Jace and soon became very close friends. Eventually, they became parabatai. Alec also developed feelings for Jace, though because of the Clave's stand on homosexuality, he remained closeted, with only his sister, Isabelle, being the only person who, secretly, knew about it.
One night in August 2007, Alec was staking out the Pandemonium club for demons with Isabelle and Jace. While confronting one they caught, they were seen by what they initially believed to be a Sighted mundane, who later turned out to be a Shadowhunter, Clary Fray.
Alec instantly disliked Clary and her mundane friend Simon and was unwilling to trust them, even more so when Jace seemed so drawn and even attracted to Clary. Alec became rather jealous of Clary and the attention Jace gave her; he would then confront her about being a problem for Jace, and the whole group in general, multiple times, to no effect. However, despite his reservations, Alec and Izzy both helped Jace and Clary in their investigation regarding the abduction of Clary's mother.
While following up on a recent lead, Alec and the others met with the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane, who openly flirted with Alec. He then accompanied Jace, Isabelle, Clary, and Simon to retrieve the Mortal Cup. In the fight against the Greater Demon Abbadon, Alec was seriously injured. With their tutor Hodge unable to treat him, he contacted Magnus Bane before he abandoned the children. Magnus was in turn able to heal him and stayed with him until just before he recovered. During the time when Alec was unconscious and recovering, Valentine Morgenstern finally revealed himself, and their mentor Hodge was discovered to be in league with Valentine. Through Valentine, Hodge was able to escape his curse and almost immediately left the Institute.
Upon hearing about what Magnus did for him afterwards, Alec went to see Magnus at his apartment to thank him. After verifying Magnus' attraction to him and working up the courage, Alec even asked him out. Magnus then gave him his first kiss and agreed to go on a date with him. While their first date did not start out so well, they were able to work it out in the end. The new couple then continued to secretly see each other.
For weeks, the young Shadowhunters were left without adult supervision due to Hodge's departure. They went on demon-hunting trips without instructions and advice, something both Alec and Isabelle were both initially skeptical about. Eventually, their family returned from Alicante and immediately had to deal with the repercussions of them knowing who Jace really was: Valentine's son.
Hurt and confused about the revelation, their parents allowed the vindictive Inquisitor Herondale to investigate Jace, as the others suspected Jace of possibly being in league with Valentine. When the Institute received a distress call from the Silent City the same night Jace happened to be imprisoned there, Alec went with Clary and Isabelle to respond to the call as the adults were not around to do so immediately. He was reluctant to take Clary, whom he still saw as a liability, but eventually agreed to allow her to come along, since she was the only one of them who had been there before. When they found Jace nearly passed out in his cell, Alec helped him up the stairs, and he contacted Magnus to save him.
When Isabelle suggested that they meet with the Queen of the Seelie Court, Alec agreed and was adamant about going. However, when Jace offered to go in his place, Alec had a change of heart, realizing that it would allow him more alone time with Magnus. He claimed that it was more important for Jace to go and encouraged them to go without him.
Throughout the first parts of the book, Alec tried to deny his relationship with Magnus, despite obvious evidence: Jace noticed bite marks on Alec's neck after a night out, Magnus helped the Lightwoods with magic for Alec despite being initially unwilling, and Alec even had a key to Magnus's apartment.
When Luke and Maia were attacked by demons, Alec was with Jace and Magnus when they arrived at Luke's to heal them. When they began discussing Clary's unique ability with runes, he volunteered himself to be the guinea pig to see if a rune she created would work.
Jace Marked him with a Fearless rune that Clary had invented just as his parents, his sister and the Inquisitor entered the home. Alec then stood up and, thanks to the effects of the rune, confessed to the room that he was seeing someone, specifically a warlock. However, before Alec could tell them who exactly he was dating, Magnus knocked him unconscious with magic, knowing that, normally, Alec wouldn't make the decision to tell everyone that he is gay. When he woke up seconds later, he quickly scrambled to lie that he wasn't seeing anyone, and Magnus helpfully added that he was delirious due to demon toxins.
The Inquisitor then took Jace away, and Alec pretended to agree with them so that the Inquisitor would trust him enough to not suspect that he would break Jace out. He agreed that the Inquisitor was right to do what she was doing, and that Jace should be punished since he broke the Law. After Jace had been caged up in a Malachi Configuration, however, Alec was the one to help him escape. He explained that he saw that the Inquisitor wouldn't be swayed, so he pretended to agree to get on her good side, which was how he was able to sneak to Jace. He brought Jace food, and suggested that he jump 30 feet up in the air to get out of his runed prison, since the configuration didn't have a ceiling.
When Jace succeeded in jumping out of the cage, Alec took him to Isabelle's room, where he called Magnus for help again. Then he watched Valentine refuse the Inquisitor's deal - Jace's life for the Mortal Instruments - and afterward, Alec was forced to inform his parents and the Inquisitor that Jace had escaped. Alec then joined the rest of the Conclave in storming Valentine's ship against his army of demons, helping Jace fight one of the more dangerous demons until the demon grabbed him and flung him from the deck.
He was saved by Magnus who pulled him out, but Magnus, at that time, was very close to falling unconscious because of the energy needed to strip the ship of the wards. Alec made the decision to stay with Magnus and give him his strength so he could stay conscious and continue to keep the wards down.
The Mortal War
At the beginning of the book, Alec went to Idris with the rest of his family. After an attack by Forsaken, Simon had to be portaled to Idris with the Shadowhunters. Alec and his family stayed with their family friends, the Penhallows. They met Jia and Patrick Penhallow's nephew, Sebastian, unaware he was actually Jonathan Morgenstern, Valentine's son. Alec took Simon to the Consul Malachi Dieudonne under the impression that he would be sent back to New York, but Malachi instead took him to Inquisitor Aldertree who imprisoned Simon. Alec returned to the Penhallow's house and found Jace outside. Alec told Jace about leaving Simon with the Inquisitor, which made Jace angry. Alec and Jace engaged in a small fight which was interrupted by Isabelle request that they come inside. Alec sent a fire message to Magnus asking if there had been any Portal activity in New York. When Magnus replied that there had been none, Alec told Jace and Isabelle about Simon being imprisoned by the Inquisitor, and Jace punched a picture window, injuring his hand. Alec took Jace to their shared room and bandaged Jace's arm, telling him that he deserved to heal like a mundane, without using healing runes. Jace asked Alec about his relationship with Magnus Bane, which Alec refused to acknowledge, as he thought he was still in love with Jace. Jace then asked Alec to kiss him as a test, but Alec didn't; this made him realize that he did not have feelings toward Jace and that he truly loved Magnus.
Alec, Isabelle, Aline Penhallow and Sebastian were discussing Jace's relationship with Clary when they were interrupted by Max, who wanted to ask Isabelle if anyone could climb the demon towers. Isabelle told Max to go back to bed. A demon attacked the Penhallows' house and took Aline. Isabelle went after her while Alec held Max back. Alec went to find Isabelle, which left Max with Sebastian. Alec found out from Isabelle that Aline ran off after killing the demon and realizing that the wards have been broken, allowing demons in the city. Alec took Isabelle back to the Penhallows' and told her to stay inside the house with Max and Sebastian while he went to find Aline. Alec searched for Aline through Alicante, but instead found Magnus battling a horde of Iblis demons in Cistern Square. Alec saved Magnus's life by killing an Iblis demon. Alec and Magnus talked about their relationship and they admitted that they love each other. Alec and Magnus were surrounded by Iblis demons and Alec promised to introduce Magnus to his family if they survived and he agreed, resolving their relationship conflict. Alec and Magnus killed the Iblis demons and headed to the Hall of Accords.
Alec met up with Jace and Clary at the Accords Hall. Clary gave Magnus the Book of the White to wake up her mother, Jocelyn. Sebastian came to the Hall to talk to Clary. Alec and Jace were furious at Sebastian as he had left Isabelle and Max alone at the Penhallows' house. Sebastian told Alec and Jace that their parents were at the house with them and they told him to go on ahead. Alec, Jace and Clary decide to go rescue Simon, who was left behind at the Gard.
Alec, Jace and Clary rescued Simon from his prison cell at the destroyed Gard and Simon's friend, Samuel Blackburn, who was actually Hodge. Alec, Jace, Clary and Simon realized Hodge knew what and where the Mortal Mirror was, which is actually Lake Lyn. Sebastian killed Hodge, and Alec and the others realized that Sebastian was a spy for Valentine. Alec, Jace, Clary and Simon fought Sebastian, but Sebastian had the upper hand and vanished. Alec, Jace, Clary and Simon returned to the Accords Hall. Alec and Jace found their family and realized Max was killed by Sebastian. They mourned his death.
Alec tried to calm his mother down when she got into an argument with Jia and Patrick about their nephew, Sebastian, killing her son. Alec, Jace, Robert and Maryse attended Max's funeral. Isabelle chose not to go as she blamed herself for Max's death. Alec and his family pulled some strings and got a house that was abandoned when the family left Alicante. Alec and Jace talked to Clary and Simon about Sebastian being an impostor, and they believed the real Sebastian Verlac was killed.
Alec, his family, and Simon watched as Clary confronted the Clave about facing against Valentine and wanting to show them her Alliance rune. Clary drew a rune using Patrick's stele that showed the person whom they loved the most, and it is implied that Alec saw Magnus. While the Shadowhunters and Downworlders prepared to face Valentine as part of the Mortal War, Alec drew the Alliance rune on himself and Magnus and then kissed Magnus in front of his fellow Shadowhunters and Downworlders, including his family and friends, publicly acknowledging their relationship.
Alec, his boyfriend Magnus, and the rest of the adult Shadowhunters went to Brocelind Plain to face off against Valentine's demon army, a battle which only lasted minutes and left the Shadowhunters victorious. Alec felt his parabatai connection with Jace break briefly when Jace was killed by Valentine, but when he returned to Alicante, Jace was alive. Alec and his family and friends attended the victory party at Angel Square. Alec introduced Magnus to his parents, Robert and Maryse, where they and everyone in Alicante watched the fireworks.
Camille and Lilith
After the Mortal War, Alec and Magnus had been on vacation for the past seven weeks. Alec and Magnus had been to Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Vienna and somewhere in India as Alec had been sending Jace photos of himself and Magnus. Alec and Magnus's vacation was cut short a day when they returned to New York as the vampire, Camille Belcourt was being interrogated by the Conclave as she was killing former Circle members and she wished to speak to only Magnus Bane. Alec and Magnus along with his mother, Maryse and Simon met with Camille. Alec was shocked to realize Camille was Magnus's vampire ex-girlfriend.
Alec demanded to know how many people Magnus had dated. Magnus didn't state how many and brushed it off. Magnus told Alec that he had dated men and women including mundanes, vampires, warlocks, werewolves and a djinn or two. Realizing that Magnus was bisexual, Alec and Magnus got into an argument, which was overheard by both Simon and Camille. Alec then went inside the Institute to talk to Isabelle.
Magnus talked to Camille about why Camille had been killing former Circle members and Camille told him that she was ordered to kill the Shadowhunters but didn't say who. Camille reminisced with Magnus about their past together and she mentioned Will Herondale and she noted the similar appearance between Will and Alec notably their black hair and blue eyes. Camille also pointed out Magnus's immortality to Alec's mortality and how someday Alec will eventually die whereas he won't. Magnus told Camille that she could give him the past while Alec is his future. Magnus' conversation with Camille was abrupt as Maryse and Alec entered the Sanctuary, and Magnus told them that they had come to some agreement and he discussed it with them inside the Institute.
Alec and Magnus attended Jocelyn and Luke's reception party for their engagement at the Ironworks. Alec and Magnus were still fighting as mentioned by Clary when Simon, Jordan and Isabelle arrived at the table. Magnus recognized Jordan's necklace from Praetor Lupus as Magnus knew the werewolf who founded the organization, Woolsey Scott. Alec got angry with Magnus and he stalked away from the table and then Magnus went to find him.
Alec sat alone at the empty table and he was approached by Magnus. Magnus asked Alec what's wrong. Alec asked Magnus about his past and who Will was. Magnus told Alec that Will was a Shadowhunter and that Will did look like him but Will had more of Jace's personality and reassured Alec that nothing happened between them. Alec told Magnus that he felt trivial to him as he believed he had just a long line of lovers, one died or went away and Magnus would get another. Alec asked Magnus why he wanted the Book of the White so badly and asked him if there was a spell for immortality in it. Magnus told Alec the price of being immortal is that you do nothing for something. Alec and Magnus's conversation was interrupted by Isabelle as she told Magnus that Camille escaped the Sanctuary and Maryse wanted him to help her search for Camille. Magnus went to the New York Institute to search for Camille and he told Alec that he was not trivial.
Alec along with Isabelle, Maia and Jordan searched around the Ironworks party when Isabelle realized that Simon was missing. Alec, Isabelle, Maia and Jordan left the party and they went to Jordan and Simon's apartment to find anything that might lead them to where Simon was. Isabelle found a card from a band promoter named Satrina Kendall. Isabelle showed it to Alec and he realized it one of the names of the Greater Demon, Lilith and mother of all demons. Alec, Maia and Jordan found out from Isabelle about the Church of Talto, what Clary found there and the dead half-demon baby at Beth Israel Hospital. Alec, Isabelle, Maia and Jordan decided to check the address out to find Simon.
Alec, Isabelle, Maia and Jordan found and entered the apartment at the Upper East Side and they walked through each of the floors. Alec, Isabelle, Maia and Jordan entered on of the floors of the building and they ended up finding dozens of dead half-demon babies. Alec and Isabelle along with Maia and Jordan were horrified by this and Alec and Isabelle thought of their little brother, Max. Isabelle and Alec went after a shadowy figure which turned out to be a woman wearing a track suit. Alec and Isabelle found out the woman was a Church of Talto cult member and she served Lilith. Alec and Isabelle found out from the woman that the mothers were the ones injected with the demon blood along with the fathers, and they were getting sicker and would die. Alec and Isabelle found out Lilith was in the building with Simon. Isabelle demanded to know where Simon was however, the woman died. Alec and Isabelle attempted to go the roof to find Simon but they were approached by Cult members brandishing weapons.
Alec, Isabelle, Maia and Jordan fought against the Cult members and one of the cultist ran off and Alec chased after the cultist separating from the others. Alec found himself in a maze of small rooms and he entered one of the rooms and he found Camille. Camille told Alec that Lilith's cultists broke into the Sanctuary and brought her to the building and brutalized her. Camille told Alec that Lilith was the one who ordered her to kill the former Circle members. Camille begged for Alec to free her. Camille told Alec that there was a way for he and Magnus could be together forever and she would tell him if he freed her. Alec freed Camille by cutting the chains with his seraph blade. Isabelle found Alec and she told him that she and the others killed the cultists. Alec turned around and he found that Camille left. Alec and Isabelle took the elevator up to the roof to find Simon.
Alec and Isabelle got off the elevator at the roof and crashed into Clary, Jace and Simon. Alec rushed over to Jace and demanded Jace to tell him what happened. Jace asked Alec to heal Clary for him and he agreed. Alec drew two healing runes on Clary's wounds while talking to her about Jace and he reassured Clary that she was all Jace wanted. Alec and Isabelle saw the demonic rune that Lilith used to possess Jace and it was still on his chest. Alec and Isabelle learn that Lilith brought Jace, Clary and Simon to the building for Lilith could use Simon's Daylighter powers to resurrect Sebastian, Simon having killed Lilith, Clary asked the Angel, Raziel to bring back from the dead back in Idris and Lilith being Sebastian's mother and him being in a glass coffin. Alec went out to the roof deck to send a fire message to Clave asking for backup. Alec, Isabelle and Simon went down to the lobby leaving Clary on the roof with Jace. Alec went to go get Maia and Jordan as Isabelle and Simon waited in the lobby.
Alec, Maia and Jordan got off the elevator as Maryse, Kadir, Magnus and the other Conclave members entered the building. Magnus ran over to Alec and embraced him and expressed his worry over him. Magnus apologized to Alec about leaving him before and told him that Camille was gone and nobody knew where she went. Magnus reassured his boyfriend, Alec that he wasn't trivial and he told him that he wasn't ready to let him and pictured having him for fifty, sixty more years. Alec and Magnus decided to hope for the best in their relationship despite Alec's mortality to Magnus's immortality. Alec and Magnus were last scene kissing passionately in a corner in the lobby.
Alec and Isabelle and their family and friends realized Jace and Sebastian were missing. Alec and Isabelle and the Shadowhunters of the New York Conclave had been searching around New York for Jace for two weeks straight and they had been tired from sixteen hour patrols. Magnus had been trying the Morgenstern ring to locate Jace but he'd been unsuccessful, and he was doing it for Alec. Alec attended the Council meeting about searching for Jace. He, along with Magnus, Luke, Brother Zachariah and the new Consul, Jia Penhallow wanted to continue the patrols full force however, the Clave declined as they had to attend to another matter particularly the wards around Wrangel Island were smashed and they sent a team to repair the wards. Alec talked to Isabelle and Clary about the Council meeting. At first, Alec disagreed with Clary's plan to talk to the Seelie Queen using a bell the Queen gave her. Alec and Isabelle eventually agreed to go with Clary to talk to the Queen and they headed down to the cathedral.
Alec talked to Magnus about their plans and Magnus decided not to go with them as he and Seelie Queen had bad history or feud. Alec, Isabelle and Clary talked to Aline and they met her girlfriend, Helen Blackthorn. Aline told Alec that she wanted to thank for what he did with Magnus at the Accords Hall which gave her the push to come out to her parents. Alec asked Aline about how her parents reacted. Aline told Alec that her parents were sort of ignoring it like if might go away if they didn't talk about it. Isabelle told Aline that their parents were okay with it. Aline told Alec, Isabelle and Clary that Jace would find his way back to them and she knew it, and Clary thanked her. Helen's brother, Julian asked Alec, Isabelle and Clary if they were siblings. Isabelle told him that there was three of them Clary told Julian that she wasn't related to them and she had no siblings.
Alec, Isabelle and Clary met Simon outside the Institute and they headed to Central Park to go to Faerie Court. Alec and Isabelle talked about their father, Robert applying for the Inquisitor position. Alec, Isabelle, Clary and Simon arrived at Central Park and Clary rang the bell and they were greeted by Meliorn, who escorted them to the Seelie Queen. Alec and the others asked for the Queen's help in finding Jace. When the Queen was accidentally offended she put a glamour on Alec that made him appear an old man. Clary apologized for any rudeness and the Queen took the glamour off Alec. The Seelie Queen demanded Clary to steal a pair of faerie rings from Institute and to bring them back to her and in exchange she would help them find Jace. Clary agreed to do what the Queen had asked. Alec, Isabelle, Clary and Simon left the Faerie Court. Alec went to Magnus's apartment and he found Magnus trying to figure out what Lilith's spell was going to do. Alec told Magnus about his visit the the Faerie Court. Alec continued to struggle with the fact that he would eventually die whereas Magnus will still continue to live. Alec grabbed a snuffbox with the initials W.S. on the box and suspected that it was Will's. Alec questioned Magnus about the snuffbox and Magnus ignored the questions and mentioned that immortality was becoming the third person in their relationship. Alec asked Magnus about Camille and where she went. Magnus told Alec that it didn't matter to him where she was, and Alec decided not to tell Magnus that he was the one who freed her. Alec asked Magnus to come to bed and he told Alec that he would be there soon. Alec knew that when Magnus was doing work knowing his work could last hours.
Alec was woken up by his boyfriend, Magnus and was given a cup of coffee. Magnus told Alec that he needed to meet with his sister and friends at Central Park by Turtle Pond. Alec told Magnus that he wouldn't be attending the Council meeting. Alec and Magnus got into an argument over his mortality and Magnus's immortality while Alec was getting dressed. Alec left Magnus's apartment and he ran into a vampire subjugate of Camille and delivered a message to Alec. Alec headed to Central Park when Isabelle and Simon were talking about Simon's sister, Rebecca and they were soon joined by a distressed Clary. Alec, Isabelle and Simon learned that Clary saw both Jace and Sebastian while in the Institute library as she tried to steal the faerie rings for the Seelie Queen. Alec, Isabelle, Clary and Simon discussed Jace and Sebastian and them deciding not to go to the Seelie Queen because Clary didn't get the faerie rings, but she actually did and decided to keep them for herself and gave the other ring to Simon. Alec went to the abandoned City Hall subway station and he confronted Camille. Alec demanded to know where Jace was. Camille told Alec that she had no idea where Jace was and she knew Lilith's son, Sebastian had taken him. Alec demanded Camille to tell him about a way for he and Magnus could be together forever and Camille didn't give him an answer. Alec fought Camille and they were somewhat match. Camille told Alec that he may not want immortality but he could take away Magnus's immortality.
Magnus let Clary and Jocelyn stay at his apartment when Jace and Sebastian came to their house and Luke got injured. Magnus told them that the Praetor Lupus could help Luke. Alec arrived at the apartment and he asked Clary if it was true that she saw Jace and Sebastian again as he got a text from Magnus and she said yes. Alec asked Clary about how Jace was. Alec learned that Jace was working with Sebastian and he was worried about Jace. Brother Zachariah arrived at Magnus's apartment and informed Alec, Magnus, Clary and Jocelyn that Jace and Sebastian were bound together in a sort of demonic parabatai connection and that if one of them died, they both died, and there was no weapon in the world that could sever the connection. Jocelyn suggested they go to the Iron Sisters and Magnus agreed. Alec suggested that Isabelle could go to the Adamant Citadel with Jocelyn to speak to the Iron Sisters. Alec, Magnus and Brother Zachariah witnessed Clary and Jocelyn's argument and Clary stormed out to her room. Alec and Magnus stayed in the living room talking to each other. Alec and Magnus talked to Isabelle about Jace and Sebastian being bound together and them thinking about a way to kill Sebastian without killing Jace. They also taked about having Isabelle to go with Jocelyn to talk to the Iron Sisters. Magnus noticed how unhappy Alec was because Jace was missing and he spoke to Isabelle about it. Alec was asleep on the couch and his head was on Magnus's lap and Magnus stroking Alec's hair when Simon entered the apartment and Magnus told Simon that Isabelle was in the first bedroom on the left.
Alec came out of the bathroom and he had a conversation with Isabelle before she shooed him away to get in the bathroom as Alec went to his and Magnus's room to get dressed. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Jocelyn discussed about Jocelyn and Isabelle going to the Iron Sisters as they can only be female Shadowhunters. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Jocelyn Portaled to the Verrazano-Narrows bridge in Staten Island and Alec and Magnus stayed behind as Isabelle and Jocelyn went to Adamant Citadel. Alec sneaked away from Staten Island and he met up with Camille at the City Hall station. He was interested in the offer she was suggesting. Camille told Alec that there is a spell to rid a warlock of their immortality and she would do it for a favor in return. Alec was told by Camille to kill Raphael.
Alec, Magnus, Isabelle, Jocelyn and Simon discussed how the Iron Sisters weren't able to help them, but they told them that a weapon from heaven or hell might sever the connection between Jace and Sebastian, and them discussing the option of summoning a Angel or a Demon. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Simon agreed to summon the demon, Azazel, who was a Greater Demon, Lieutenant of Hell and Forger of Weapons, but Jocelyn didn't agree with them and she wanted to leave and take Clary with her. Simon told Jocelyn that Clary wasn't in the apartment. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Jocelyn listened as Simon told them that Clary made a Portal and left and she was with Jace and Sebastian, which angered Jocelyn. Simon showed the faerie ring he had, with which he could communicate with Clary telepathically. Jocelyn got mad at Simon, but Isabelle stuck up for him. Jocelyn expected reports from Simon every day or she would go to the Clave and she left Magnus's apartment to be with Luke. Alec, Isabelle and Simon helped Magnus to make preparation for the summoning of Azazel by setting numerous candles in a careful circle, as Alec and Isabelle were scattering the floorboards outside the circle with salt and dried belladonna as instructed by Magnus. Alec, Isabelle, Simon and Magnus sat at the table as Magnus told them about how to summon a demon.
Alec, Isabelle and Simon watched as Magnus did the summoning ritual to summon Azazel. Azazel mentioned Magnus' father which unsurprisingly shocked the group. Magnus explained to Azazel about the situation with Jace and Sebastian and demonic parabatai connection. Azazel offered them a solution to their problem but demanded a little something from them for his plan. Azazel told them that he wanted a memory from each of them. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Simon gave Azazel one of their memories which pleased him. Azazel told the group his plan was that he would be released into the world and he would take Sebastian living into Hell and eventually Sebastian's and Jace's connection would burn away. Magnus refused Azazel's plan and banished him. Maia and Jordan arrived at Magnus' apartment with news and they wondered what their fiends had been up to. Alec went to see Camille and she demanded to him as to why he didn't kill Raphael. Alec told Camille that he barely knew Raphael and it would be breaking Covenant Law for killing him. Alec asked Camille about Magnus's past particularly family. Camille told Alec that Magnus' mother was an Indonesian woman and his real father was a Greater Demon, but didn't reveal which demon. Alec asked Camille about his relationship with Magnus. Camille told Alec that one must preserve some mystery in one's relationship. Alec returned to Magnus' apartment during the night and then undressed and got into bed with Magnus but accidentally leaned on Chairman Meow waking up Magnus. Magnus asked Alec about where he was and Alec told him mysterious places. Alec kissed Magnus and they ended up making out and might have slept together.
Alec and Magnus woke up the next morning to the pentagram making mini tornados and writing words in scorch letters. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Simon, including Maia and Jordan, who had just arrived, watched as Azazel appeared before them in the pentagram and demanded a answer from the group. Magnus declined Azazel's plan and tried to banish him but it didn't work on Azazel. Chairman Meow ran into the pentagram and Simon went into the pentagram to save the cat. Chairman Meow streaked out of the pentagram and went under a table. Alec and the others watched in shockness as Azazel shoot backward from Simon because of the Mark of Cain. Azazel left causing a big mess in Magnus' apartment. Alec, Isabelle, Maia and Jordan helped clean up Magnus' apartment after the destruction made by Azazel's appearance as Simon talked to Magnus about a plan: him summoning an Angel to get a weapon that would save Jace and kill Sebastian. Alec, Isabelle, Maia and Jordan disagreed with Simon's plan to summon the Angel, Raziel and they asked Magnus about the safety of enterprise. Isabelle talked to Simon privately and she begrudgingly accepted that Simon would be the one to summon the Angel and she and the others would help him in any way they can.
Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Simon discussed on finding a secluded location to summon the Angel, Raziel to take place. Simon suggested them going to Luke's farm to summon Raziel. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Simon decided to summon Raziel early afternoon as they needed rest. Simon asked Jordan if they could borrow his truck to take them to Luke's farm and he agreed. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Simon took Jordan's truck to Three Arrows Farm to summon Raziel. Alec revealed to Magnus, Isabelle and Simon that while his mother, Maryse had accepted the fact that he's gay; his father, Robert had yet to accept that he is gay as Robert asked his son what he thought had turned him gay. Alec told them that when he and Magnus were on vacation and he'd call from the road; Robert never asked how Magnus was. When Alec got up to talk in Council meetings nobody listened, Maryse and a friend of hers were talking about grandchildren, and they shut up when he came into the room. And how Irina Cartwright told him that no one would ever inherit his blue eyes. Magnus put a reassuring hand on Alec's shoulder. Alec and the others arrived at Three Arrows Farm.
Alec watched as Magnus drew the pentagram by the lake for the summoning of Raziel, as Simon noticed the distance between them, as Simon talked to Isabelle about summoning the Angel. Magnus completed the pentagram and Alec, Simon and Isabelle went down by the lake. Simon stepped inside the pentagram as Magnus gave him his spell book and told to sound the words out and it worked. Alec, Magnus and Isabelle walked back to the house after Simon gave them a few farewell words. Simon summoned Raziel and asked him for a weapon to sever the connection between Jace and Sebastian. Raziel agreed to give him a weapon in exchange for his Mark of Cain. Raziel gave Simon the sword Glorious, which belonged to the Archangel Michael, and Raziel took away Simon's Mark and the Angel disappeared. Alec, Isabelle and Magnus walked toward the lake and found Simon holding the sword Glorious.
Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Simon (with the sword Glorious) dove back to New York when Simon heard Clary's voice in his head. Clary told Simon about Sebastian's plan to create Dark Shadowhunters using a demonic version of the Mortal Cup called the Infernal Cup. Sebastian planned on resurrecting Lilith and they would do it at the Seventh Sacred Site, and Simon told Clary about the sword Glorious. Simon told Magnus to pull over and they needed to talk. Alec, Magnus and Isabelle listened to Simon as he told them what Clary told him about Sebastian's plan. Alec, Magnus, Isabelle and Simon decided to split up and get reinforcements and then meet at the Institute to Portal to the Burren.
Alec and Isabelle were at the Institute and they took the elevator up to the library as Isabelle asked her brother about his relationship with Magnus. Alec told Isabelle that he and Magnus were fine which worries Isabelle as she thought they got in a fight. Alec questioned Isabelle on why wasn't she and Simon dating since she obviously had feelings for him. Alec argued with Isabelle over her feelings for Simon as they reached the library. Alec and Isabelle entered the library and they heard Aline and Helen talking to their mother about Amatis's disappearance. Alec and Isabelle told their mother, Aline and Helen about Sebastian's plans and how to save Jace, and they decided not to tell Jia or the Clave. Alec, Isabelle, Maryse, Aline and Helen met with Magnus, Simon, Maia, Jordan and the New York werewolf pack and they Portaled to the Burren.
Alec and the others arrived a little late as some of the Shadowhunters following Sebastian had already drank from the Infernal Cup. Alec killed Dark Shadowhunters from atop of stone dolmen as the other Shadowhunters, Magnus, Simon, Maia, Jordan and the werewolves from the Pack battled with the Endarkened to save Jace and Clary. Magnus got injured by Amatis and almost died but he used Alec's strength in order to heal himself. Jace was stabbed by Glorious breaking the connection between him and Sebastian, and Sebastian escaped. Clary heard Jace's heartbeat as his family and friends descended on him and they returned to New York.
Alec was in the infirmary when Jace woke up and he was glad to have his brother back and Isabelle came into the room. Alec and Isabelle told Jace that the Silent Brothers had been checking on his wound from the archangel's blade and that Clary was alright and well. Alec and Isabelle told Jace that he had Heavenly fire inside of his body. Alec, Jace and Isabelle shared a touching sibling moment.
Alec went to the City Hall station to refuse Camille's offer to take away Magnus's immortality, but he found out that Magnus was following him to his shock. Magnus told Alec that Camille sent him a message about Alec's meeting with her, and the offer she struck with him. Alec apologized to Magnus telling him that he wasn't going to go through with it, and had already told her that he wouldn't kill Raphael. Magnus told Alec that he had been thinking about taking away his immortality, as that was part of the reason he wanted the Book of the White. He told Alec that he wanted to experience growing old with someone he loved and that it would be Alec. Magnus broke up with Alec and told him to get his things from his apartment and leave the key on the dining room table. Magnus told Alec that he didn't want see him, his family or any of his friends ever again, as he was tired of being their pet warlock. Alec dropped his witch light and when Magnus picked it up it flickered a red glow. Alec and Magnus embraced as the witch light flickered different colors between them and they shared one final kiss. Magnus told that while he loved him; he couldn't forgive him for what he did. Magnus walked away leaving a heartbroken and tearful, Alec behind.
Alec was furious with himself and he intended to kill Camille for causing Magnus to break up with him. However, he found out that fourteen year old Maureen Brown, the recently turned vampire, had already killed her.
The Dark War
Alec was seen to be still depressed after the break up with Magnus claiming that, for the first week after the break, he was in a state of disbelief and sadness. He had been calling and texting Magnus who didn't reply, which caused Jace to break his phone. Jace on seeing his miserable parabatai then went to Magnus' loft to talk to him about getting back together with Alec, he also observed that Magnus was almost as miserable after the break up. Jace also seemed to be worried when he thought Alec was hurt. As the Shadowhunters in the New York City Institute prepared to leave for Idris, Magnus came over and talked to Alec. Magnus said that he forgave Alec over the incident, but it wasn't working out. During the conversation, Magnus kissed Alec but immediately pulled away, saying he shouldn't have done it. Magnus then claimed it was not working out because of his immortality and Alec's mortality. Alec then retaliated by saying that he was the reason, because he knew nothing about Magnus, while Magnus knew everything about him. Before Magnus left, he warned Alec about his dream of a city of blood and bones, saying that those would be the bones and blood of Shadowhunters, and he needed Alec to live.
At one point in Alicante, he and Isabelle got into an argument with Robert, during which angry and emotional Isabelle blurted out Robert's previous affair with Annamarie Highsmith, much to everyone's surprise.
When the Downworlder represenitivess and Jocelyn got kidnapped, Alec almost killed Matthias, a member of the Endarkened Shadowhunters who revealed the news. Later when the gang went to the Seelie Court in order to find the pathway to Edom, where they thought the prisoners were hidden, he killed Meliorn for not revealing where the prisoners were hidden. When they entered Edom, a demon created an illusion based on their dreams. Alec, in this hallucination saw Magnus as his boyfriend, where they had the entire Clave, including his father accepting their relationship, seeing that they were engaged. He broke the illusion when Alec's subconcious formed a Magnus telling him that the vision wasn't real, soon after which he killed the demon.
After they found the prisoners, Magnus was freed, and kissed Alec in front of others. Magnus became sick due to the influence of his father, Asmodeus, who was trying to get Magnus to summon him. When Alec understoond this condition he asked others to go find Jocelyn and meet them in the center. As they moved on to find a way out, the walls began to close in. They found a way out of it, but was led to the two thrones, only to find Clary seated in one of them and others shocked. Alec tried to hurt Sebastian once again but was again unsuccessful. To everyones relief, Clary then tricked her brother into death, by stabbing him. After his death and the borders to other world sealed, the only way for them to get back to Idris, was to get Magnus summon his father, which he did. And it turned out to be Asmodeus, on of the Princes of Hell. Asmodeus then demanded to take the warlocks immortality, which would kill him in return of transporting them back to Idris. Alec then wanted to stay, to die with Magnus rather than go back to Idris. They shared what seemed to be their last kiss. After Simon offered his immortality and memories of the Shadow Worlds taken from him instead of Magnus, they returned back to Idris.
During the last scenes, Magnus apologized for all that he did, and together they decided to make everyday count and over come the barriers of mortality and immorality. Magnus then gave him a journal of the important things in his life. Months later in the wedding, held in Three Arrows Farm, for Luke and Jocelyn, Robert said that he had been always proud of him and also revealed the feelings his parabatai Michael Wayland had for him. After this revelation, he tried to forgive his father for divorcing his mother and being homophobic but would still hold deep resrevations regarding his father's trechary.
Personality and traits
Despite their similar looks, Alec is very much the opposite of his sister in the sense that he is self-conscious and serious. Magnus describes Alec as straightforward, and Alec says that he is blunt, as it is the only way he knew to be. Clary perceives that Alec appears "uncomfortable in his own skin". This is possibly due to his fear of admitting to others that he is a homosexual. He convinces himself to believe he is in love with Jace as a way to escape his fear of being hurt by falling for Magnus. Alec is very protective of his family and assumes the most responsibility as the oldest of his siblings. He and Jace are parabatai, meaning that they are warriors who fight together and are closer than brothers.
He seems to pride himself in being allowed to attend Council meetings, him being the only one of the Lightwood children to go.
Alec is often soft spoken and serious in most situations. He tries his best to act wisely, and is shown not be as brave as Jace is; but cautious. Up until later in the story, he had never killed a demon. However this is more because he puts Jace and his sister's safety before killing demons, frequently putting himself in danger to protect them. He shows himself to be extremely caring of the ones he loves, and is willing to do anything to save them, also he is said to be "easily guilted". Between the whole group, Alec is the most clever. Alec can also become extremely jealous, getting angry at Magnus when he discovers Magnus' long dating history and relationship with Camille, a vampire woman. He also becomes jealous of Will, who he suspects as another one of Magnus' several lovers and, he learned from Camille, is said to look extremely like him.
Alec is also usually the healer in the group, most asking for his help when in need of an iratze, to the extent that when Alec refuses to heal Jace's bleeding hand in Idris before the events of the Moratal War, Jace is unwilling to attempt to heal himself.
In addition to protecting his siblings and friends from demons, he is also very aware of emotional pain and heartbreak, and does what he can to prevent this from occurring among those he loves, though Isabelle points out he has no trouble giving his heart away. He is concerned for Jace's emotional well-being in the earlier books, when he believes Clary to be his sister. He also dislikes Isabelle's long string of exes, and is awkward around her and Simon, though he does tell the latter that he believes he is right for his sister.
Alec is tall and fit, with a thin, wiry build. He has jet-black hair that ends at his jaw and stunning blue eyes. He was said to share a startling resemblance with his distant relative Will Herondale.
Skills and abilities
- Nephilim physiology: Being Nephilim, Alec possesses a variety of enhanced physical and mental abilities granted to him by the blood of Raziel in his veins and also by the angelic Marks of the Gray Book. He also has power to perform tasks unique to their species, such as the ability to use and call on the power of angels for their seraph blades. This includes enhanced strength, agility, stamina, and coordination, which only improves over time and practice.
- Runic magic: Due to the angel blood in their veins, all Shadowhunters are able to apply runes on their skin without any real danger. These Marks, in turn, give varied effects that serve to benefit the wearer.

–Alec to Magnus, City of Heavenly Fire
When Clary Fray, in City of Bones, tries to restore her lost memories, she figures out a man named Magnus Bane is the person who caused the block on her mind. When she and the group meet him at a party he is throwing, Magnus openly flirts with Alec upon seeing him, even flirtatiously asking Alec, "As for you...call me," before winking at him. In a bonus scene of the novel, as seen on Cassandra Clare's official website, it is shown that Alec eventually gathered up the courage to confront him about their growing feelings for each other. Also when Alec reveals to Magnus that he has never kissed anyone, the two share their first kiss when Magnus kisses him before arranging for a date within the week; officially starting a secret relationship with Alec (since he was not ready to come out as gay yet).
When Clary confronts the Clave and proves her rune powers to them, the Rune she draws makes people see who they love the most. It is implied that Alec saw Magnus when she did this, as he looks confusedly from Clary to Magnus, who was standing beside him. Before the big battle between the Clave and Valentine's army of demons, Alec kisses Magnus in a crowded hall, finally publicly revealing his homosexuality to his parents and the Clave. In City of Fallen Angels, Alec is on a world tour with Magnus with stops in Germany, Austria, and France. Alec's resemblance to William Herondale is noted. Their relationship turns complicated when they have several fights about Magnus's past sexual history and Alec's mortality, finally facing the fact that Alec will age and die one day whereas Magnus will continue to live forever in his youth, but they eventually make up deciding to take things one step at a time. In one of the last scenes of City of Fallen Angels, they are seen kissing as they make up.
Their relationship once again becomes complicated throughout City of Lost Souls. Alec has difficulty getting over the fact that he will die some day whereas Magnus never would. Therefore, when given the chance, he goes to see Camille Belcourt. She reveals that there is no way to make him immortal (other than the typical options of using black magic and vampirism, which Alec both bluntly rejects using). However, she soon reveals that there is a way to take away Magnus's immortality. However Alec, unable to agree to her terms, refuses her offer. Despite this, when Magnus eventually discovers that Alec had even considered the offer at all, ends their relationship despite Alec's emotional pleas for one last chance. Magnus firmly tells Alec that while he loves him, he couldn't forgive him for even considering to shorten his life. He then tells him to gather his things from his apartment and to leave his key to the apartment on the table when he left, also severing ties altogether with him saying he never wanted to see him (or his friends and family in addition) ever again. The two share one final kiss before Magnus walks away, leaving a heartbroken and tearful Alec behind staring after him.
After the unexpected breakup, Alec keeps trying to contact Magnus and even gets his friends to speak on his behalf. Nevertheless Magnus keeps his distance, save for the occasion he kissed Alec on impulse. When Magnus gets kidnapped with other Council representative, Alec panics and goes along with his friends to the land of Edom, where after lot of struggles he finds Magnus and Luke. As Magnus was becoming weak, he tells other to go and helps out Magnus. After the death of Sebastian, Magnus finally summons his father to get his companions transported back to Idris, after a long conversation and agreeing on taking Simon's immortality and memories of the Shadow World from him instead of Magnus, they reaches back to Idris. By the end Alec and Magnus unites and when Magnus apologizes for keeping secrets from him, and makes up for it by giving him a book containing important events thought out Magnus life.
Being the eldest Lightwood children, Isabelle and Alec are very close and are always looking out for one another. It is stated that the reason Alec has never killed a demon is that he is always looking out for her and Jace. Earlier in the series, before everyone found out about Alec's sexuality, Isabelle looks out for him, telling Clary particularly to not tell anyone when she figures it out, concerned of what others might think of a gay Shadowhunter. He was slightly concerned when he found out that Simon and Isabelle had slept in the same bed (though it is implied nothing sexual happened), but didn't push the issue as they had bigger problems.
|“||Exactly. Despite my staggering good looks, you actually don't like me that way.||”|
–Jace confronting Alec, City of Glass
Jace Herondale is Alec's adoptive brother, best friend (and parabatai), whom he first believes he is in love with. After years of Alec's infatuation, Jace confronts him, telling Alec that he only loves him because he is "safe" (Alec can use their relation as an excuse to hide his feelings) and there is no chance of being hurt. He says that Alec is afraid and only uses his love for Jace to avoid pursuing other relationships. At this, Alec realizes that he will never be with Jace and that he truly loves Magnus Bane although his strong brotherly love for Jace remains. Some time after the Mortal War ended, Alec consistently sends pictures of himself and Magnus to Jace from their travels. After Sebastian's resurrection, Alec was worried about Jace when he went missing, but he was happy when Jace returned to the Institute. During Dark War, Alec's relationship with Jace grows even more when Jace realizes how upset Alec was when Magnus was kidnapped. Jace comforts Alec about Magnus.
Max was Alec's younger brother. Alec seems to care and love his younger brother even though Max hero worshipped Jace instead of Alec. When Max was killed by Sebastian Morgenstern during the events of Mortal War, Alec and the rest of the family mourned his death and went to his funeral (with the exception of Isabelle). Alec seems to have handled his grief over Max the easiest then the rest of the family.
Maryse is Alec's mother and he has the same black hair and blue eyes as both of his parents. Alec seems to have a good relationship with his mother as she accepted the fact that he is gay when he came out to her at the time of the Mortal War.
Robert is Alec's father. As a child, Alec saw his father as the biggest most terrifying man that he could have imaged, these thoughts were brought back when he saw his father in gear. While both have moments of pride and respect for each other it's a known fact that Robert has yet the accept Alec's sexuality as it was revealed some time after the Mortal War. After the events of the Dark War, Robert slowly begins to accept Alec's sexuality as Robert told Alec about how his former parabatai, Michael was in love with him. Robert told Alec that he has always been proud of him and that he is a better man than he was.
Alec initially strongly disliked Clary and was jealous of her, due to Jace's obvious attraction and growing feelings towards her, and never bothered to hide his dislike towards her. But when he realizes that Jace truly loves Clary and that she was a good person in her own right, he began to open up towards her and shed his feelings of hatred towards her. He is especially kind to her after Clary and Jace discover that they are supposedly siblings (this could possibly be because of the fact that he feels Jace is now "off limits" to her) and continues to mend a friendship with her throughout the series. Even after the truth is revealed that Clary and Jace are not actually siblings, he continues to be kind to her as he now shares a passionate love with Magnus.
Simon is friends with Alec. Alec initially showed a dislike for Simon because he was mundane. When Simon became a vampire, Alec started to slowly became friends with him although they are not particularly close with each other. Simon went to talk to Magnus for Alec after they broke up to convince Magnus to get back together with him. In Edom, Alec let's Simon drink his blood and he talks to Simon about his sister, Isabelle and he admits that he approves of Simon being with his sister as he makes her happy.
Maia is friends with Alec. Alec and Maia aren't particularly close with each other. Maia has helped Alec and the rest of their friends fight against both Valentine and Sebastian.
Aline is a family friend of the Lightwoods. When Alec kissed Magnus at the Accords Hall before the Mortal War, Aline was inspired to come out to her parents sometime after the war and meet Helen, who became her girlfriend. After the Council meeting after the Dark War, Aline told Alec that she was going to Wrangel Island to be with Helen.
Helen is Aline's girlfriend and she seems to be good friends with Alec. After the Dark War, Alec voted against sending Helen away to Wrangel Island during the Council meeting.
